Marion wins $2.09M grant for water main project

Marion has been awarded $2.09 million from the state to replace a 3,200-foot section of 1928-era water main on Wareham Road, upsizing it to improve reliability and fire flow before Route 6 reconstruction begins.

The Town of Marion announced Oct. 19 that it has received $2.09 million from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities through the HousingWorks Infrastructure Program to fund the Wareham Road Water Main Project.

The grant will pay for replacing 3,200 feet of the existing water main, which was installed in 1928. The town says the pipe has a history of frequent breaks and has become a maintenance burden that creates an obstacle for future development.

As part of the project, the main will be upsized from 6 inches to 12 inches, which the town says will improve system reliability and provide greater hydraulic capacity for area residents, businesses and future housing. The work will also include new, strategically placed hydrants and improvements to water flow intended to bolster firefighting resources in the area.

The town plans to finish the project before the Massachusetts Department of Transportation reconstructs the Route 6 corridor, which would avoid cutting into new pavement once that work begins.

Marion will coordinate with the state agency and expects to finalize contracting requirements in the coming weeks. Additional details on the construction timeline, traffic logistics and neighborhood impact will be released as planning continues.

"This grant will allow the Town to improve critical infrastructure, ensuring a safe and reliable water supply while reducing the risk of future infrastructure breaks, improve fire flow and overall hydraulic deficiencies within the water system," Town of Marion Engineering Manager Meghan Davis said in the release. "The grant funding allows the Town to execute vital water utility upgrades without placing additional financial burden on Marion residents or depleting the municipal budget."
